Built by Someone Who’s Been in the Truck Seat
Hi, I’m Jeff McDonough — founder of TowPro Academy, with over 200,000 miles and 10+ years of towing experience behind the wheel. I built this because I spent years learning how to tow the hard way.
I’ve been hauling trailers across the country for over a decade. I’ve towed boat trailers, horse trailers, utility trailers, and fifth wheels. I’ve navigated mountain grades, backed into tight campground spots, dealt with trailer sway at highway speeds, and learned — sometimes the hard way — exactly what it takes to tow safely and confidently.
When I started towing, I couldn’t find a single resource that answered my questions plainly and completely. Most guides were written by people who’d never touched a hitch. Or they assumed you already knew what GVWR meant. Or they buried the practical advice under a mountain of product recommendations.
I built TowPro Academy to be the resource I wish I’d had.
What TowPro Academy Is
TowPro Academy offers both a paid online course and a library of free towing guides for drivers who want to tow safely — whether you’re pulling your first boat trailer or backing a fifth wheel into a tight spot for the hundredth time. The course covers everything from hitching up correctly to handling real-world emergencies, in 55 step-by-step video lessons.
Every guide on this site is written to be practical, specific, and honest. No fluff. No vague advice. Just the real information you need to hook up, hit the road, and get there safely.
What we cover:
- Towing fundamentals — understanding towing capacity, payload, GVWR, tongue weight, and all the specs that actually matter
- Hitch setup and wiring — choosing the right hitch class, ball size, and trailer light connections
- Driving with a trailer — backing, turning, parking, highway driving, mountain grades, and bad weather
- Safety systems — trailer sway control, brake controllers, towing mirrors, and weight distribution hitches
- Vehicle-specific towing — trucks, SUVs, and what your owner’s manual is actually telling you
- Pre-trip preparation — checklists, tire safety, and everything to check before you leave the driveway
Our Standard
Every article on TowPro Academy is written or reviewed based on real-world towing experience, manufacturer specifications, and current industry standards. We don’t publish generic advice. We don’t recommend products we haven’t researched. And we update our guides when specifications or best practices change.
Towing is serious business. A miscalculated load or a missed safety check can put lives at risk. We take that responsibility seriously in everything we write.
