Fall Towing Special: $79 (reg. $99) through Oct 31 → Enroll

Short answer: in most cases, no, you don’t legally need a towing class to pull a boat, camper or utility trailer on a regular driver’s license. Whether you should take one is a separate question, and the honest answer depends on your experience, your trailer and how you like to learn.

We sell a towing course, so take this with that in mind. We’ll still tell you when a class probably isn’t worth your money.

Is a Towing Class Legally Required?

For typical recreational towing, most U.S. states don’t require a class or a special endorsement. That covers a fishing boat, a pop-up camper, a mid-size travel trailer or a landscaping trailer. The rules change at higher weights and with certain trailer types. Some states have special license classes or endorsements for heavy combinations, large fifth-wheels or longer rigs, and commercial use is a different category altogether.

Because the rules vary, check your own state’s DMV before your first trip. Our overview of towing laws by state and trailer brake requirements by state is a good starting point, but your DMV has the final word.

So Why Would Anyone Take a Towing Class?

Your license test probably never involved a trailer. Yet towing changes almost everything about how a vehicle drives:

A class doesn’t do anything magical. It gives you the right information in the right order before you learn it the hard way on the highway.

A Class Is Worth Considering If…

In-Person vs Online Towing Classes

In-person training gives you hands-on time behind the wheel with instant feedback, which is hard to beat for backing practice. It can also be harder to find for recreational towing, it’s tied to a schedule and location, and it usually costs more.

Online courses are usually cheaper, self-paced and available any time, and you can rewatch lessons right before a trip. The tradeoff is that you have to supply your own practice. The best results come from pairing an online course with deliberate practice in an empty lot.

Free Ways to Learn (Whether or Not You Take a Class)

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Deciding

If you answered “yes” to all of these, you’re probably in good shape without a class. If several were “not sure,” that’s not a reason to panic. It’s just a sign that some structured learning, whether free or paid, would pay off before your first long trip.

Whatever you decide, plan a low-stakes first trip. Pick a nearby campground or a quiet weekday at the boat ramp, go at an off-peak time, and bring a helper. Give yourself extra time so nobody is rushing you. Confidence comes from good repetitions, and the first few count the most.

Our Honest Take

Nobody needs a towing class the way they need a license. Still, many first-time towers learn their first lessons through near-misses, from a jackknifed boat ramp to an overloaded half-ton. A structured course is one inexpensive way to avoid that. If you’re already experienced or have a great mentor, save your money. If you’re starting from scratch, a course plus practice is a smart shortcut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special license to tow a travel trailer?

In most states, a regular driver’s license covers typical travel trailers. Some states require a special license or endorsement above certain weights or lengths, so check your DMV. For the details, see Do You Need a Special License to Tow a Trailer?

Is a towing class required to tow a boat?

Generally, no. Boating education requirements for operating the boat on the water are separate from towing the trailer on the road. Check your state’s rules for both.

Can I learn to tow on my own?

Yes. Many people do, using free guides, videos, a mentor and parking-lot practice. A course mainly saves time and fills gaps you might not know you have.

Will a towing course lower my insurance?

Don’t assume it will. Some insurers may consider training and others won’t. Ask your insurance provider directly.
