Trailer tongue weight is one of the most critical factors for safe towing — and one of the most misunderstood. Get it wrong and you risk dangerous trailer sway, poor vehicle handling, and potentially a serious accident. This guide breaks down trailer tongue weight so you can load your trailer correctly every time.

What Is Trailer Tongue Weight?

Trailer tongue weight is the downward force that the front of your trailer exerts on your vehicle’s hitch ball. It’s measured in pounds and should be between 10% and 15% of your total loaded trailer weight. So if your trailer weighs 5,000 lbs, your tongue weight should be between 500 and 750 lbs.

Why the 10-15% Rule Matters

Too little trailer tongue weight (below 10%) causes the rear of the trailer to be heavier than the front. This leads to trailer sway — the dangerous side-to-side oscillation that can cause you to lose control. Too much tongue weight (above 15%) overloads your rear axle, affects steering, and can damage your hitch and vehicle frame.

How to Measure Trailer Tongue Weight

The most accurate way to measure tongue weight is with a tongue weight scale. You can also use a bathroom scale with a board, or take your loaded trailer to a truck stop scale. Many weight distribution hitch manufacturers also offer tongue weight gauges. Aim for a reading that falls between 10% and 15% of your total trailer GVWR.

How to Adjust Trailer Tongue Weight

If your trailer tongue weight is too low, move heavy cargo forward (toward the front of the trailer). If it’s too high, move weight toward the rear. The goal is always that 10-15% sweet spot. Use the 60/40 loading rule as a guideline: load roughly 60% of cargo weight in the front half of the trailer.

Trailer Tongue Weight vs. Towing Capacity

Your vehicle has two separate ratings to consider: towing capacity (the max trailer weight it can pull) and tongue weight capacity (the max downward force the hitch can handle). Always check both numbers in your owner’s manual. Exceeding either rating is unsafe and can damage your vehicle.

When to Use a Weight Distribution Hitch

If your trailer tongue weight is more than 10% of your tow vehicle’s curb weight, you should consider a weight distribution hitch. This system uses spring bars to redistribute the tongue weight across all four wheels of the tow vehicle, improving handling and leveling both the truck and trailer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 10-15% tongue weight rule?

Tongue weight should be 10 to 15% of your total loaded trailer weight. This range keeps the trailer stable and resistant to sway without overloading the hitch.

What happens if tongue weight is too low?

Too little tongue weight makes the trailer prone to dangerous side-to-side sway, because not enough weight sits forward of the axle to keep it tracking straight.

What happens if tongue weight is too high?

Too much tongue weight overloads the hitch and rear axle of the tow vehicle, lifting the front, reducing steering and braking control, and stressing components.

How do I measure trailer tongue weight?

Use a tongue-weight scale, a bathroom-scale beam setup for lighter trailers, or a CAT scale. Then adjust cargo placement until you reach the 10-15% range.
