Never attempt to tow through standing water of unknown depth. Water that appears shallow can be deep enough to disable your truck and trailer, sweep you off a road, or cause severe damage to your drivetrain. If you can’t see the road surface through the water, do not enter it. “Turn around, don’t drown” applies even more forcefully when you’re pulling a trailer — the added weight and momentum make stopping and reversing much harder.

Know Your Trailer’s Wind Profile

High-profile trailers — fifth wheels, toy haulers, large travel trailers, enclosed cargo trailers, horse trailers — act like sails in crosswind conditions. The higher and broader your trailer, the more wind force it experiences. Flat-bed and low-profile utility trailers are much less affected. Be extra cautious when passing large vehicles in wind: maintain your speed, hold the wheel firmly, and be prepared for a significant push as you clear the truck. Many experienced towers avoid passing large vehicles in high-wind conditions entirely.

Towing in Snow and Ice

Reduce Speed Dramatically

Snow and ice require the most significant speed reduction of any weather condition. Stopping distances on ice can be 10× greater than on dry pavement. With a trailer attached, that already-frightening number gets worse. In snow and ice, tow at 30–40 mph on highway sections if conditions require it — regardless of what other traffic is doing. Getting to your destination safely is more important than keeping pace with cars that aren’t pulling 8,000 lbs behind them.

Electric trailer brakes apply braking force to the trailer wheels directly. On ice, if the trailer brakes lock up the trailer wheels, you can lose trailer control almost instantly. Reduce your brake controller’s gain setting in icy conditions so the trailer brakes apply less aggressively. Black Ice and Trailer Dynamics
