Choosing the Right Hitch Height for Your Travel Trailer

Getting hitch height right is what makes a trailer tow level, and a level trailer is what keeps your weight on the correct axles, your tires wearing evenly, and your brakes working as designed. Hitch height is a separate question from weight distribution: even a perfectly balanced load tows badly if the coupler sits too high or too low. This guide covers how to measure hitch height, choose the correct ball mount, and confirm your travel trailer rides level.

Why Hitch Height Matters

When a travel trailer sits nose-high, weight shifts to the rear axle, tongue weight drops, and the trailer becomes prone to sway. When it sits nose-low, too much weight lands on the front axle and tongue, overloading the coupler and diving the tow vehicle’s rear. Only a level trailer distributes weight across both axles the way the manufacturer intended, giving you predictable braking, even tire wear, and stable tracking.

Park both the tow vehicle and trailer on level ground. Measure from the ground to the top of the trailer’s coupler when the trailer is sitting level (use its tongue jack and a level to set it). Then measure from the ground to the top of your tow vehicle’s receiver opening. The difference between those two numbers, accounting for coupler drop, tells you how much rise or drop your ball mount needs.

Choosing the Right Ball Mount

Ball mounts come in drop and rise configurations and in different shank lengths. Pick the drop (or rise) that places the ball at the height that makes your loaded trailer sit level. Because trucks squat slightly when the trailer is loaded, measure with a typical load if you can. An adjustable ball mount is worth considering if you tow more than one trailer or want to fine-tune height without buying multiple mounts. Always confirm the ball mount and ball are rated for your trailer’s weight.

Confirming a Level Ride

With the correct ball mount installed and the trailer loaded as you normally tow it, the trailer frame should sit parallel to the ground. Sight along the frame rail or use a level on the A-frame. If a weight distribution hitch is part of your setup, set hitch height first, then dial in the spring bars, since weight distribution assumes the trailer is already level. Recheck after any change in load or tow vehicle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common errors are measuring on sloped ground, measuring the trailer empty when you always tow it loaded, and reusing a ball mount from a different trailer without re-checking. Each one leads to a nose-high or nose-low stance and the handling problems that follow. Take the measurements fresh for each trailer and load.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my trailer hitch height is correct?

Load the trailer as you normally tow it and check that the frame sits parallel to the ground. If the nose points up or down, the ball mount drop or rise is wrong.

Should a travel trailer be level or slightly nose-down when towing?

Level is the target. A very slight nose-down attitude is acceptable and often preferable to nose-high, but the goal is a frame that sits parallel to the ground under load.

What happens if my trailer is not level?

Nose-high shifts weight rearward, lowers tongue weight, and invites sway. Nose-low overloads the front axle and coupler. Both cause uneven tire wear and unpredictable braking.

Do I set hitch height before or after weight distribution?

Set hitch height first. Weight distribution assumes the trailer already sits level, so install the correct ball mount, then tune the spring bars.
